Sky high

There is no doubt Australia’s hip hop music scene is robust and filled with promise. Good Buddha is living proof of that. They’ve received reasonable air play with the first single from their LP – Hit the Sky Running. It is easy to see why “Movin On” has been selected as the single, for it has the necessaries of being a hit with the fans, upbeat, vibey hip-hop that isn’t all that different to the Hilltop Hoods, Bliss n Esso sounds that we are used to hearing.

This is not to say the rest of the record isn’t without merit. It’s obvious these funksters have diverse musical influences, why not use an entire album to demonstrate them. Beats synonymous with dub, funk, reggae and roots can be discerned as major elements through different tracks, “Bouncin” demonstrates the reggae vibe nicely and the solid mcing which accompanies the tribal phat beats of “Soul people” lend this act to being afforded success among their peers.

If you’re into your Australian hip hop I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, you may even be surprised by the risks these guys dare to take. I’d also recommend it as a great bbq/low key gathering soundtrack. Look out for the hidden track too – it’s probably the loveliest surprise of all!
