Blue & Green

Artist: Peter Smith Quartet

Label: Independent

Jazz in blue

Smooth seduction jazz from Toronto’s French Quarter by this Canadian quartet, Blue & Green was recorded live and bears a fervent intimacy for it.

Band-leader Peter Smith features predominantly on B-flat saxophone and flute accompanied by Kevin Laliberte on flamenco twinged acoustic guitar, Drew Birston on Bass and Marcus Chonsky on “things you can hit with your hand” (percussion). Together they lend a stripped down Bossa Nova vibe and Latin tweak to classics such as Dizzy Gillespie’s ‘A Night In Tunisia’ and Thelonius Monk’s ‘Bye-Ya’ as well as ten other svelte numbers.

The arrangements are tight without being constrictive, the attack mellow without making you yawn, and the result sexy without wearing you out.
