2003
APRA WINNERS
Kasey
Cambers, Silverchair, Grinspoon and The Waifs battled it out for
the prestigious Song of the Year award at the 2003 APRA Music Awards
which were held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Sydney on May 19. Our
congratulations go to Kasey Chambers who walked away with the award
for her song about the frustration of not getting radio airplay
"Not Pretty Enough" ironically taking the crown. She also
walked away with the Most Performed Australian Work and Most Performed
Country Work and officially becomes the recipient of the most APRA
music awards received by any Australian female artist.
However,
the other nominees didn't walk away empty handed. Daniel Johns of
Silverchair picked up the Songwriter of the Year award for the second
time while Craig Nicholls of The Vines won the Breakthrough Songwriter
award. The Ted Albert Award For Outstanding Service To Australian
Music went to legendary AC/DC brothers Angus and Malcolm Young and
the late Bon Scott. The award for Most Performed Dance Work went
to Disco Montego & Katie Underwood for their hit "Beautiful"
while the award for Most Performed Jazz Work' went to James Muller
for his composition "Paul Bley". For the 2nd consecutive
year, Savage Garden received the award for the Most Performed Australian
Work Overseas for their worldwide smash "I Knew I Loved You"
and the Most Performed Foreign Work went to Five For Fighting for
the song "Superman" (It's Not Easy). Long
considered to be one of the annual highlights of the Australian
music industry¹s events calendar, the APRA Music Awards honours
composers and songwriters who have achieved excellence in their
craft in the previous year. Congratulations to all of the winners.

COUPE
SCOOP
Ever wondered
what goes on behind the scenes at a big rock concert? Well Stuart
Coupe, the man who's done it all (ie, been a journalist, publicist,
international tour promoter, band manager, researcher, author and
independent record label director) has the answer in his new book
titled "The Promoters". It provides an inside look into
the world of some of this country's biggest promoters including
Michael Gudinski, Paul Dainty, Michael Chugg, Kevin Jacobsen and
Michael Coppel. It looks at every aspect of the touring business
from the deal making and organisation, the major wins/losses incurred,
and some of the outrageous demands of international superstars.
Recommended to anyone with an interest in promoting or a general
interest in the Australian rock industry.
