Noel
completes the Oasis circle
Ever since
Oasis called it quits, every fan has been waiting for the Gallagher
brothers to release their solo debuts. Liam and Beady Eye launched in
March to mixed reviews and so now the circle is complete with Noel
Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
Before
either record released, I have always
thought that the pressure was on Noel (as he was the mastermind and
songwriter behind Oasis) to come up with something more than just OK -
it needed to be great. High Flying
Birds is not at that level but I do
believe it surpasses Beady Eye's debut is both quality and durability.
It is a very mature record that fits Noel and actually turns out to be
a real grower. It takes multiple spins to sink in but the first 5
tracks easily become ingrained in your head.
This is not just a fluke but because the songs
contain great song elements you would expect and a classic verse chorus
verse that reminds you of Noel's roots but also that he has tons more
in the tank. If there would be any complaining about High Flying Birds
it would be about the lack of big guitars, as most tracks pull back.
"AKA...Broken Arrow" is a stellar uptempo number, while "(I Wanna Live
In A Dream In My) Record Machine" has that Oasis anthem feel but
overall, High Flying Birds
maintains its mid-tempo pace.
I will tell you that Noel's record will play
better next year at this time then Beady Eye but only by a little,
which might be a surprise because I think everyone expected Morning
Glory Part II. Regardless, Noel
Gallagher's High Flying Birds is worth
spinning and has plenty of rewards as it is still a great everyday
listen that certainly will keep us excited to hear his second, more
"out there" record due to release in 2012.
