Davis produces
finely crafted Machines
Emma Davis has dropped
her debut album, Machines, and set off on a national tour to
stamp her name on the Australian music scene. Release of her beautiful
track ‘Machines’ shows Emma’s ability to unravel a story
in sweet melodies, with simple notes of the casiotone setting a delicate
sound. Emma’s music is raw and honest. She is peaches and cream,
with an unexpected dollop of gorgeous rich warm honey.
I had the pleasure of meeting the delightful Miss Davis,
who graciously gave me glimmer of her adorable psyche and wisdom beyond
her 24 years. She is cute and sweet, with a natural edginess that is ultra
cool.
First
memory of music...
To start my Dad was a ‘disc jockey’! (Emma giggles). I’m
not sure it is my first memory, but my family and I went to Tracey Chapman
concert when I was a young teenager and thinking of this brings back really
happy memories.
I started learning classical guitar at the age of eight,
I had a dreamy guitar teacher which kept me going. He taught me Beatles
songs and got me into Simons and Garfunkel... then got into the high school
band playing “bad guitar” in a funk punk all boy band, one
day they forced to sing and that’s when I noticed I had a voice.
How would you sum up yourself and your album?
I’m the chronic middle child, I can never make decisions and I’m
a perfections.
The album is about stuff, I guess mainly a collection of moods and my
disillusioned view of our world. The album has been written in progression.
Originally it was going to be an EP but I decided that I had enough to
make a full blown album.
Fave venue to date...
Favourite place to play is a festival - particularly Peat’s Ridge.
I’m pretty exciting about my first tour as have only ever supported
bands in the past. I love playing Melbourne beacuse this is were my family
memories are...Melbourne is where we all moved to when we moved over from
London. However, if we are talking Sydney my favorite venue would have
to be The Vanguard and The Red Rattler.
Biggest challenge so far...
Biggest challenge so far is finishing the album - I wanted to make it
completely perfect, but then on the same hand I didn’t want to rush
it but was so sick of my own songs. I needed to help to let go. It was
my Dad who gave the final nod to the album completion, and once I knew
he liked it... I liked it.
What's you fave driving song...
I drive an old beetle with a tape player only - so listen to the same
mix-tape over and over. It drives my friends nuts!
What do you do in your spare time...
I love sipping coffee and eating. I’m getting into surfing and I
play social soccer. I love soccer mainly because we go the pub afterwards.
Really, most of time is taken up with music and work! I currently make
ends meet by working at cocktail bar and the university bar as well as
the music department office.
What’s next for Miss Emma Davis...
The ultimate for me would be writing the next album in a secluded house
in Cornwall, using the quiet green and blue surrounds to write the next
chapter.
Emma Davis' debut album Machines is available at
Fish music stores, iTunes and My Space.
