In 1997 Wang returned once more to Hong Kong to make Chinese Box, and caused much upset within the films crew by shooting scenes using the handover of Hong Kong by the United Kingdom as a background. The films star Jeremy Irons demanded that he receive political insurance for this, but continued to work even though Wang could not afford to pay it. The movie itself, about an English photojournalist who suffers from leukaemia and, with only months to live, travels round Hong Kong with a camcorder to film the city one last time, is a truly haunting experience. Wang returned to the United States in 1999 to make Anywhere But Here, a film that starred Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman as a mother and daughter who relocate to Beverley Hills from small town America.

Wayne Wang's latest offering is The Centre Of The World (2001). A simple boy meets girl story set in Las Vegas, this film has already received good reviews from American critics and audiences. Balthazar Getty and Molly Parker are the boy and girl in question, and they have numerous sexual encounters within the seedy, neon environment of the city they inhabit. >>>

Shot with a digital camera, Blair Witch style, the film apparently has a rough edge that compliments gritty storyline. The Internet promotion tactics have received as much publicity as the film itself, as the web promo is very explicit and has been given an X rating. The website was Wang's personal idea, as he wanted the public to have the same experiences as the character in his movie.

An unconventional film-maker, Wayne Wang has made his unique mark on American cinema. A master at portraying the experiences and culture of the Chinese in America, he has gradually widened his creative belt and is now equally as adept at telling non-Asian tales. He has refused to be stereotyped in any way, and has proved that he can make excellent films in many different genres. Wayne Wang is a true talent, and is most definitely a name to look out for in the future.
