May not restore your faith, but presents a rare look in

The Mountain Goats always bring something unique to the musical table with every release and The Life of the World to Come meets this characteristic completely.

Mountain Goats - "Ezekiel 7 and The Permanent Efficacy of Grace"

John Darnielle is the guy behind the moniker and his music has always had religious themes floating throughout in the background but on The Life of the World to Come they come more to the surface as he simply titles the songs after Bible versus. You might stop reading at this point, but don't, because the next thing you need to know about Darnielle is that he's a lapsed Catholic and professed nonbeliever.

That might make you scratch your head but what you will find here are 12 songs about lessons he learned from these listed verses. He actually uses the Bible for its interesting storytelling and it is the driving influence through the entire record.

After you comprehend that tie-in, you will find that the songs here are some of the best work Darnielle has penned. They are as interesting as the verses they are named after. With that said, the songs presented are a nice mix of tempos, showcase solid musicianship and never box The Mountain Goats into one direction.

Between the concept and the quality songs, The Mountain Goats have released another album to rave about and The Life of the World to Come only gets better with each successive rotation.
